Why Coaching?

That is a question for you as much as it is for me.  Why should you seek coaching?  Why did I choose coaching as a vocation?  As a pastor and (I like to think) altruistic person, I feel called to empower others.  This applies both to one-on-one relationships as well as to the masses.  I am one who believes that change in any environment or setting is possible and that it takes genuine leaders to be the catalyst.

I wish I could go and change the world by myself.  I wish I could go and show each individual how great they are and the astonishing capacity that they have to do unfathomable things.  I wish I could instill healthy ideologies and foster compassion and mindfulness in every individual.  I wish I could show each child that they can succeed without having to hurt or trample on others the way that they have been hurt and taught.  I wish I could bring out the good in every individual and eradicate all war and hunger.  But I can’t.  I’m only one person.

The next best thing then, is to unlock the leader in as many people as I can, one person at a time.  Whether I’m doing a one-on-one coaching session, a group session to eight people, or a motivational speaking engagement to 300, I am trying to achieve the same goal: to show each person that they have unique skills and talents and an innate capacity for leadership.

There are so many different categories of coaching: leadership, executive, life, career, transitional, end-of-life, and the list goes on and on and on.  Ultimately, however, they all have the same common denominator – leadership.  Even in our daily lives, we have the opportunity to exhibit leadership again and again.  How we interact with others, the amount of confidence coupled with compassion we have for others, the awareness we have about the people and things around us – all of these things relate to our capacity for leadership.

Catherine of Sienna said, “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.”  Even if you are not a “religious” person, this quote holds true.  Be who you were meant to be.  Be who you really are.  Be who only you have the capacity to be and you will ignite the world.  So there you have it.  The answer to both questions is the same: You need coaching to unlock your true self and see the greatness within you and how to use it.  I coach because I know that greatness is there and I want to ignite the fire within you and watch it spread for the benefit of humankind.
